DISTRACTION
A distraction is anything within or round you thatprevent
your concentration or diverts your attention from a particular thing or cause, within
a specific fragment of time.
The word “ANYTHING”
as used above simply means a distraction can be in form of anything such as
thoughts, actions, clothes, phones or phone calls, ideas and so on.
The word “WITHIN
YOU” or “AROUND YOU” simply
means that a distraction can come from the things within you, or the things
around you.
The word “CONCENTRATION”
or “ATTENTION” are the direct
opposites of the word “DISTRACRION” and distraction is antagonistic to them.
The sentence “SPECIFIED
FRAGMENT OF TIME” as used in the definition simply means that distraction
is not a permanent phenomenon. It only comes up within a specific time, while
its permanence or longevity depends on your ability or inability to conquer it.
When you are set to pray at 5:00am and then there is a
phone call to you at 5:05am (i.e. just before or during the prayer), that phone
call becomes a distraction. But when you ignore that call at that specific time
until you are done praying, then you have conquered the distraction.
When you are set to achieve something in the present e.g. B.Sc.,
then a thought of your past failures bring doubts within you; then you must
know that such thoughts or past failures are distractions. If you must achieve,
then you must first conquer your distractions by living in the present.
When you are set to study within a specified period of time,
and then in the process of studying, a flash-back of past memories of your
fiancée, boy-friend, girl-friend or broken relationship run through your mind,
such thoughts become distractions at that specific period of time.
“When a man accounts for his achievements, he only
includes his challenges and not distractions; of course we are meant to conquer
DISTRACTIONS as our responsibilities, but face and conquer CHALLENGES as our
rivals” (F.O.P. IMENE)
So nobody is interested in how you perform your
responsibilities; they are of-course your responsibilities and not theirs, if
you don’t do them, who will? Everyone is only interested in how you face and
overcome your rivals.
“When a man’s failure is analyzed by generations
behind, his distractions become his own weaknesses, while his challenges become
their learning point” (F.O.P. IMENE)
This is one important reason why you must not allow
distractions to limit your span of achievements. Always be conscious of time,
seasons and priorities. Don’t live your life on UNCERTAINTIES, always be in
charge and know that you can make your tomorrow how you want it to be; even
though we are used to this everyday quote “No one knows tomorrow”. But
interestingly, don’t be surprised to hear this,
“DISTRACTION is not a loss of focus; it is a mere
distortion in effectiveness and efficiency due to the lack of control, borne
out of clash of interests at the same time” (F.O.P. IMENE)
So you can imagine how mighty but insignificant your
distractions are. All you need to do today is evaluate your life and find out
those distractions (whether tiny, insignificant or significant) that have
always been down-sizing the tenacity of your purpose, reducing your rate and
power for efficiency, and posing limitations to your span of achievements, or that may sometime be and fight them out them out of your
life completely and until you win back the cause of your existence. Remember
that diligent people are people who are sited in heavenly places, far above
their distractions. It is this same set of people that will stand before kings
and not mere men (Prov 22:29). So if you must achieve greatness, then you must
be above your distractions. Lastly, in all your doings, never forget this,
“Even though GREATNESS
exalts a man or woman, DISTRACTION remains a reproach.”
(F.O.P IMENE)
