Flying Eagles, Dream Team get invite for Super 4 Tournament
The 2014/15 Glo Premier League pre-season tournament dubbed – the Super 4 Tournament – will have a wider scope this year as the national U-20 team, the Flying Eagles and their U23 counterparts, Dream Team VI, have both been invited to take part in the competition scheduled to hold from January 22 and February 2 in Abuja.
The annual tournament is to prepare the League clubs for a new league season. However the two junior national teams have been invited to add more glamour as well as also use the tournament to prepare themselves for the task ahead of them.
The League Management Company, LMC, said it also wants to use the tournament to prepare the teams for the Confederation of African Football, CAF’s continental championships commencing from February this year.
The pre-season tournament will feature the top three clubs on the log of the 2013/14 season plus the Federation Cup winner. The four clubs are league winners, Kano Pillars, Enyimba International, Warri Wolves and Dolphins FC, runners-up to Enyimba in the Federation Cup.
The tournament will be played on a round-rubbing structure with each team playing five matches over five match days within a ten-day period.
Accordingly, three matches will be played on each match day.
In a press statement, the LMC spokesperson, Harry Iwuala, said the chief operating officer, COO, to the LMC Salihu Abubakar confirming the laudable changes.
“Though this is our usual pre-season activity, it is happening this time with a marked difference in that we would be having the national teams, the Dream Team and the Flying Eagles joining the traditional four clubs representing Nigeria in all CAF Club competitions to participate in the tournament with the sole objective to ensure that the six participating teams prepared adequately for their continental engagements starting next month”, Mr. Abubakar said.
Enyimba International won last season’s tournament that also featured Kano Pillars, Bayelsa United and Warri Wolves.
